Loo's Review:

Dear Bill,

I'm sorry for not writing earlier, but I wanted to make sure I gave the bass a good run before getting back to you. Since I contacted you last, she's been to innumerable practices, three recording sessions and a gig; so I think the time is right.

She feels better every single time I pick her up, her poise and balance is impeccable - like how I envisage my ideal dance partner.

I had some concerns over the sounds of the EMG pickups when I first specified them; I had read reports that they could be a bit bright. These fears proved groundless. The selection of tone woods coupled with the jazz version pickups, give a timbre to her voice I never realized I was searching for.

The preamp and its controls provide scope and sonic versatility without impeding playability. I now feel that having the options encourages me to experiment more.

Her neck profile, action and attack feel so right it's sublime. She makes it easy to play music, makes me wish I was a better player.

I think you'd be suspicious / disappointed if I didn't have comments of some form to make, and you'd be right. Based on what I know now I'd have liked an easier way of checking the remaining charge on the batteries, and (dare I say it) an easier way of changing them. Perhaps I'm just lazy. I don't know if suitable solutions exist.

I'd also have liked the cross-sectional profile of the upper horn to have been a little more circular. The latter point is only particular to the way I've found myself playing. I rest the upper horn on the left side of my chest to sense the string vibrations - it helped me judge the attack and stay on time when my headphones were accidentally disabled during recording. I think a change the curvature would increase the contact area.

All that aside, she is such a delight that I actively encourage other people to play her and share the experience. I'm not the jealous type at all.

I'm in the process of purchasing a property right now, but as soon as I'm able to, there's that five string bass project to look at...

Once again Bill, thanks, take care, and regards to you and your family.

Loo

Bill's Response:

I'm once again thrilled to hear how well the bass is performing, and being played, and enjoyed! What more could a luthier want than to know his work is appreciated. Thanks once again to EMG for producing a great set of pickups combined with a fantastic control system -- you helped satisfy Loo's needs, and helped me bring this bass to life! And, of course, a special thanks to Loo for having the confidence to order an instrument from me!!!
